Please recommend books about the French Revolution

I started playing Assassin's Creed: Unity and realised that I know almost nothing about the French Revolution. We did study it in grade 10, but I missed a lot of time due to a never-identified virus -- I was out for most of the American Revolution and all of the French, and mostly passed the class because I knew more about the Chinese Communist Revolution than my teacher. (It's not her fault, she was an art teacher who was roped in to teach history for ... reasons which I'm sure made sense at the time.)

Anyway, I've decided to fill the gap in my knowledge. I started out by trying to listen to The Rest Is History, a podcast my mum recommended, but the hosts are two English men, and they spend a weird amount of time comparing Marie Antoinette to Meghan Markle, but in a derogatory "maybe we should decapitate the Duchess of Sussex" way that I did not care for.

Then I read The French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert, which I think is from 1980. It was a solemn, dispassionate accounting of events and personalities, but didn't get into the question of, for example, why the Parisian mob went from zero to heads on pikes in the storming of the Bastille.

I've requested an inter-library loan for Citizens by Simon Schama, which I've seen recommended a lot, but I would also be eager to read a history that's not ... British? Because the British, for understandable reasons (I guess) weren't really down with the beheading of the monarch and the end of the monarchy (even though they did it first), and I feel like a pro-aristocratic bias has pervaded a lot of what I've encountered. And obviously the Terror was bad, but, like, maybe Robespierre was an asexual smol bean who was a convenient scapegoat! I'm open to the possibility!

I am open to suggestions, is what I'm saying.

(no subject)

There are so many things I want to do. I'm not getting younger, so I should just quit procrastinating.

One thing is that I want to get through my TBR list! Or at least whittle it down. My reading has dropped off dramatically, but I still keep buying books. WTF, self. I signed up for Storygraph a while ago, but now I'm serious about it! Got to keep up with what I'm doing. (username greeniegreen)

I keep wasting time on Tumblr--not that I don't love Tumblr, but I could be doing things other than staying up to date on the latest in meme culture.

And I have so many WIPs. *flails* And I REALLY need to finish the epilogue to the fic I'm posting. Before I get to the end of the chapters I have!

One thing I definitely need is new glasses. I can't even see the screen well enough to make icons anymore, and I used to love that. :( I can read just fine, but small details are fuzzy and I can't make graphics/icons with fuzzy eyes.

10 things about the gay hockey show

So, I've been stuck at home for 3 weeks now with a broken ankle. I've watched so much TV. SO. MUCH. TV. Some of it utterly delightful ("The Summer I Turned Pretty", "Queen of the South"), some of it utterly forgettable. Then "Heated Rivalry" came out, and due to the tragic circumstances of being stuck at home, I've watched the first 2 episodes. Let us acknowledge this up front: I should have only watched this show after it finished airing. Like, week-to-week is a very bad format for me with this show.

However, episodes have been consumed, this show is already doing numbers in fannish circles for obvious reasons, my guess is that that trend will continue, and so I need to get stuff off my chest I guess. Think of this not as a public statement but more as a private space where I process stuff, just for the sake of framing the below.

love!

holiday love meme 2025
my thread here

I haven't done a love meme in so long, it really takes me back. I would love to see y'all's names on there, too! (I did spy two of you, but I know there's more of you here...) But even if you don't make a comment with your name on it, I would like to say I LOVE YOU. I appreciate those of you who've stuck around even when I've only barely remembered to post and rarely comment on anyone else's posts.

I'm gonna try to do better! I mean it this time! I miss the community here so much. Even being in a different fandom than most of you, I still want you in my life and want to be in yours.

Speaking of fandom, I have started posting my Fandom Trumps Hate fic (I think I mentioned this before), and I have 4 chapters up already. I'm hoping to get it posted in full before the Steter Secret Santa fics go live, so I'm putting the chapters up at a quick pace.

But I haven't written the epilogue yet, eep! But anyway, if anyone is interested in reading, here it is:

Painting the Night With Sun (Teen Wolf, Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski, Explicit)
There's more to being a Spark than just powerful magic, and dragons don't come from eggs. Stiles has a lot to learn from his new mentor, but he and Peter have to escape the Wild Hunt first.

Featuring Steter romance, a magical castle, daring rescues, found family, and a cat with wings.
