runawayskellum: Toph, Sokka and Aang on a crime spree (Default)
All the shows are done, which is sad. I work best if I have a lot of stuff going on, and running from rehearsal to rehearsal every night has had a bizarrely positive result on my grades. Several of the shows that on offer right now I would be sort of uncomfortable doing - why hello there gratuitous rape jokes, fancy seeing you in these edgy musical theatre shows! - and I feel like I ought to be something ~weightier~ with my time. My options would be to go out and do something on my own, which would involve an hour-long bus ride out of Tiny University Town, or join a campaign group in town - although these seem to mainly consist in making cakes to sell outside of the library and argue about how to fit 'compassion, peace, diversity, love, unity and equality' onto the banner in big enough words to actually be read. There's always the LGBT group which is mostly a piss-up, but my funds don't really stretch that far.

Next year I'm hoping for an internship with one of our OMG BADASS lecturers. According to our principal, pre-9/11 it was surprisingly easy to arrange conferences with actual terrorists - at a talk the other day she told us anecdotes that started with things like 'left-wing terrorists are always so prissy' or 'oh yes, the CIA can be pretty very polite. I don't think much of their warehouses though'. That's not even mentioning Professor 'When I Was Hiding from the KGB in Moscow' and Professor 'My Five Most Amusing Encounters with the Chinese Security Services'.

My girlfriend is teaching me Hebrew. I've known for a while now that she finds obscure grammatical points supremely exciting, so really, I should have been prepared for 'first eight letters of the alphabet! go!' and 'list all the letters that require a dagesh!' (WE'RE STARTING FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OKAY) being fired at me from the early hours of the morning onwards. I feel like a slightly slow five-year-old being yelled at by a sexy drill sergeant. And I really am quite awful at languages - we spent the walk home from the pub last night going over the most basic prayer and I still hardly remember it. Passers-by, on the other hand, must have been slightly confused by our extreme thankfulness.
