Or trying to. I can only take two classes this semester (!!!) - the focus is going to be firmly placed on independent reading, researching and writing.

I'm absolutely dreading my philosophy class.

It's compulsory - I need to take it at some point during the next two years, and my current plan is to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. But I don't know how I'm going to cope in a subject with nothing but a two-hour lecture, a one-hour seminar and (presumably?) a one-hour tutorial when I can barely deal with the pre-sessional reading.

Despite this, I'm desperately looking forward to classes starting back. This year is going to be a good one, I think. The girlfriend and I have moved into our lovely new flat; unfortunately I seem to be allergic to our room (maybe it's the duvet? Maybe it's the mattress? Lots and lots of hoovering and laundering has not yet helped). We only have one rather small window and the ceiling slopes a little, which sort of gives the impression of living in a cave. So far it's novel enough that I'm quite pleased with it - we'll see how I feel when it starts getting dark before 17:00.

... I have a feeling that the more often I try to read up on metaphysics, the more often I'll be updating my journal. Yay?

1. The weather has gotten awful just in time for the Insane Golfing Event and the thousands of tourists. I'm probably a terrible person but it makes me laugh a little.

2. In just under a month L and I will be moving into our new place! During term time there will be nine of us living there, and we've arranged to house various friends during the summer months (including L's mum, over for a holiday from the States). But we will be living in a PERSON-SIZED ROOM with, get this, a double bed. My spine will love me again.

3. I started doing background reading for my classes. They're classes that don't start until October, true, but all the fear-mongering about the uselessness of non-first degrees has gotten to me.

My philosophy class sounds AWFUL. I know I should take it now and get it over with, especially since the only other class I'll be taking next semester will be International Law and I am certain it will make up for the suck, but Jesus. Some sample exam questions:

Can the same object exist at different times?

Are meanings in the head?

Are objects bundles of tropes?

These questions fill me with despair and rage. When will I be allowed to do ethics again :(

Man. The end of the year is always so sad. I haven't finished exams yet but the weather was so gorgeous the other day that we wound up sitting in the beer garden of a nearby pub drinking pitcher after pitcher of pimms, before grabbing a home-made pizza meal at our friend's place and heading out for pier-jumping and a bonfire. We didn't pier jump, but L did get me up on her back before running full-speed towards the edge. I MIGHT HAVE DIED.

Luckily, thanks to some golf championship or other, just about all my friends are staying for the summer! \o/ EVERYWHERE is looking for staff, and I have one official job and two potential jobs lined up already.

The last exam is political philosophy. It's a first year module and I am feeling dangerously confident about it. Oh well - it's political philosophy, and some of the questions should be quite interesting, although I need to focus a little more on economics than I'd like. Oh well.

INCIDENTALLY, THIS TIME NEXT WEEK I WILL BE IN JAPAN. Which is exciting.

I'm generally quite content with my capitalist false consciousness and pretend freedom, so I think my general approval of Marx is because it puts me in mind of my favourite ever book ever. Ursula Le Guin I love you so much. The library does not have The Dispossessed but a neighbour does; for now I will settle for reading your essays and literary criticism because I LOVE YOU THAT MUCH.

In other news, I finally got my MP3 player working! \o/ But it won't play things that I've ripped from Youtube, ie, almost my entire playlist. So lots of Threepenny Opera. 3PO is something else I love a lot, so today has been a good day :D
